Our Purpose: Love God, and Love Others

We follow Jesus, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, who said that the two greatest commands are to: “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-38, ESV). As Jesus’ church, our purpose is to love God, love others as ourselves, and share in this as a collective. This isn’t just a “weekend thing” for us; this is our life. Jesus gave His life to forgive us of our sins, and we owe Him nothing less than our lives in return. By showing His love to us through His actions, God has called us to more than words; as His followers, our purpose is to share that love with others.

Before Jesus left Earth for Heaven, one of the last things He told His followers was: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And, behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20, ESV). Disciples are supposed to help make disciples! This was one of the final wishes Jesus shared before leaving for Heaven. Jesus wants His disciples to help others connect with God through learning to follow Him. We, at the Fogelsville church of Christ, both firmly believe this and do our best to live it every day! We are baptized believers seeking to teach others why following Jesus is the greatest choice we will ever make, and why it is worth continuing that journey for the rest of our life.

Our Heritage: Following in Jesus’ Footsteps

As followers of Jesus, our history is His history. We attempt to cut away all the usual fluff, and pomp, that comes with religion and church. We aim to follow the Gospel the way Jesus’ earliest followers did. The Bible is our road-map for this. Our heritage is what some call “pure and simple New Testament Christianity.”

While this specific congregation began gathering on June 6th 1954 in Allentown PA, our tradition goes back to the time of the earliest Christians, all the way back to the first century. Despite many members who have come and gone through the years, as well as changes to our meeting location, our goal remains the same: to live and share the Gospel of Jesus the Christ the way Jesus has shown us. We will always share in this common bond with those who were here before us, just as we share in this bond of faith with Christians through the centuries whom we have never met. Because we use God’s Word, The Bible, as our sole authority in matters of faith, religion, love, and life, we are confident that our faith is meaningful, and that God is pleased with our worship to Him.

As the Bible says in Romans 1:16-17 (ESV): “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’”
